How to choose the scale of sculpture for a garden

The 30-second answer
Do not start from a single height or a catalogue image. Build a scale envelope: a range to test against principal viewpoints, approach, backdrop, planting, base and access. The Landscape Institute says visualisations should fairly represent what people would perceive in the field and should be proportionate to their purpose and context.[1] Choose a specific design only after testing that envelope.
Start with the viewing task and distance
First decide how and from where the piece will actually be seen. A sculpture read from a distant terrace is a different design problem from one met closely on a path. Record where viewers pause, whether they approach head-on or obliquely, and which views are primary rather than trying to derive size from one photograph.
Historic England’s setting guidance is written for heritage decision-making, but its staged method of identifying affected settings, assessing the contribution of views and documenting decisions is useful where a garden is historically significant.[3] It is not a formula for sculpture size. Record the house, terrace, arrival point and main path as candidate viewpoints, then measure the distance from each to the proposed position.
Collect the site dimensions and sightlines
Give the reviewer measurements they can work with:
- viewing distances from each principal viewpoint;
- the approach length and direction;
- opening, gateway or path widths on the route;
- backdrop height (hedge, wall, tree canopy) behind the position;
- the principal sightlines and whether the piece terminates a view.
Put the measurements on a plan or annotated survey so every designer is using the same site information.
Read the backdrop, horizon and planting
Context changes the composition. Record whether the piece is seen against a hedge, wall, planting or sky; whether its silhouette is clear; and how seasonal growth could reveal or obscure it. The National Trust’s account of Stowe shows that the placing of statues and buildings was integral to the garden design: features framed views, terminated paths and were moved as compositions changed.[6] Stowe is an example, not a rule for another garden.
Test near and far views with dimensioned visualisations
Once you have a candidate size range, test it from the agreed viewpoints. A dimensioned visualisation can place a scaled outline or model in a photograph of the setting, with the proposed height, width, footprint, camera position and viewing distance recorded.
The current Landscape Institute guidance is TGN 06/19; its own webpage confirms that earlier TGN 02/17 was withdrawn.[1][2] Its guidance is for development proposals, so a private garden scale study need not reproduce a formal LVIA. The transferable principle is honest representation: show enough context, disclose the method and do not present a persuasive montage as measured certainty. A visualisation is not an installation or structural drawing.
Coordinate the base and a human reference
The plinth is part of the scale decision: it changes eye level, silhouette and how the piece meets the ground. Record the overall composition both with and without any proposed base, and do not omit the base from the visualisation.
Give any "life-size" ambition a reference. "Life-size" is only meaningful with a stated species and reference dimensions — for example, a specific breed of horse at a stated height to the withers — because animals vary. State the reference dimension so everyone is agreeing to the same size.
Check the access and lifting envelope
A size that looks right can still be impracticable to deliver. Before fixing it, record route and gateway widths, height restrictions, surfaces, slopes, turning space, likely lifting position and known underground or overhead constraints. HSE states that lifting operations involving lifting equipment must be properly planned by a competent person, appropriately supervised and carried out safely.[5] This guide does not perform that planning.
Do not assume that any size can be produced, transported or installed. The maker, carrier, competent lift planner and relevant designers must confirm feasibility for the actual piece and site.
Issue a scale brief
Hand over a scale envelope rather than a guess:
- principal viewpoints and distances;
- approach and sightlines;
- backdrop and mature planting notes;
- base type and height;
- a stated human or species reference dimension;
- the access and lifting envelope.
RIBA’s Plan of Work is for building projects, but its emphasis on briefing, stage outcomes, responsibilities and information exchanges supports the same practical discipline: issue the brief before design choices become difficult to reverse.[4] With that brief, compare only pieces with stated dimensions and treat final foundation, fixing and lift information as separate technical work.
